Construction along 287 will improve safety in fast-growing area

Construction has started along U.S. 287 in Fort Worth, a project that will extend the southbound service road and relocate the southbound ramp at Blue Mound Road.

The construction is a collaborative project involving the City of Fort Worth, the Texas Department of Transportation and Tarrant County Precinct 3.

Northwest ISD Assistant Superintendent for Facilities Tim McClure said the project that has been discussed since the planning of the district’s third comprehensive high school, V.R. Eaton High School.

“The growing housing developments in this area of Fort Worth along U.S. 287 continues to be one of our fastest-growing areas of the school district. One of the challenges with the road infrastructure in and around this area is the ownership of the roadways by different agencies,” McClure said. “Our collaboration with all three agencies has been great from the start. The focus and commitment by all parties provided a solution on a project that could have taken approximately 10 years to finish to be formalized within a year.”

Late last year, school district trustees approved an interlocal agreement with Tarrant County for the road construction and transportation improvements to the southbound access road adjacent to Adams Middle School. As part of the solution, Tarrant County has arranged to provide all labor to build the road extension and new ramp, with Northwest ISD and the City of Fort Worth agreeing to equally share in materials and engineering costs. In addition, TxDOT has accelerated its process and provided resources and assets to the project.

Earlier in 2018, Fort Worth residents approved a bond addressing additional road improvements to Willow Springs and Blue Mound roads, which will result in the creation of roundabouts. The U.S. 287 service road project will solve major traffic and safety concerns affecting Schluter Elementary School, Adams Middle School and Eaton High School by eliminating the potential for accidents near the southbound access road and allowing for legal egress out of Eagle Boulevard toward U.S. 287. Currently, using Eagle Boulevard to access the U.S. 287 service road is considered an illegal traffic maneuver.

During the construction process, there should be no direct impact to traffic or changes in traffic patterns. The project is expected to be complete in time for the 2019-20 school year.
