Funding approved for I-35W northward extension

The purple line indicates the project limits for Section 3C, stretching from Highway 287 north into Denton County.

Mayor Betsy Price testified before the Texas Transportation Commission in Austin before the commission voted to approve funding for the final segment of the North Tarrant Express project in far north Fort Worth.

The project expands I-35W from U.S. Highway 287 about eight miles north to Eagle Parkway. The highway will provide a connection between downtown Fort Worth and the rapidly growing areas to the north.

“The completion of this phase ensures that Texas will remain a leader in commerce by providing our city and our region with easy connectivity to the rest of the nation and the world,” Price said. “Your support, along with the Texas Department of Transportation and NTE Mobility Partners’ unprecedented construction schedule, enabled us to build the North Tarrant Express, including the first two segments of I-35W, in nothing short of a spectacular turnaround time — less than 10 years.”

NTE Mobility Partners released a statement: “We are excited to continue the good work going on in North Texas to deliver expanded mobility and congestion relief in the region. We will work alongside our partners at TxDOT, the North Central Texas Council of Governments and the City of Fort Worth to complete this process and get the 3C project underway.”

Construction could start as early as this summer.
