Fort Worth Police Officers Matthew Putnam and David Jwanowski received the Top Cops Award at the 26th annual National Association of Police Organizations award dinner in Washington, D.C.

These officers and their teammates courageously protected the community from harm on Sept. 13, 2018, when they tracked down the killers of Cpl. Garrett Hull.

Hull and other members of the Criminal Intelligence Unit had been conducting surveillance of three suspects who had been involved in more than 15 armed robberies in which three people were shot. The three suspects attempted to flee on foot into the surrounding neighborhood. During the foot pursuit, one of the men opened fire, striking Hull in the head. Other officers returned fire and killed the subject before placing Hull in a patrol car and transporting him to a hospital. The other two suspects were apprehended nearby.

Each year since 1994, the National Association of Police Organizations has presented the Top Cops Awards to educate the public about first responders and to pay tribute to law enforcement officers in federal, state, county, tribal and local agencies for actions above and beyond the call of duty during the preceding year. Top Cops are nominated by fellow officers.
