Fort Worth Alliance Airport is rapidly being surrounded by housing developments.

The U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded an $8 million Airport Improvement Program grant to Fort Worth Alliance Airport.

The funds will be used to buy land around the airport for a noise buffer zone. The land around Alliance Airport is rapidly being developed for residential uses.

The local funds were part of $477 million in airport infrastructure grants to 264 airports announced by Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Chao.

Selected projects include runway reconstruction and rehabilitation, construction of firefighting facilities and maintenance of taxiways, aprons and terminals. The construction and equipment supported by this funding increase the airports’ safety, emergency response capabilities and capacity, and could support further economic growth and development.

Airports can receive a certain amount of Airport Improvement Program entitlement funding each year based on activity levels and project needs. If their capital project needs exceed their available entitlement funds, the Federal Aviation Administration can supplement their entitlements with discretionary funding.

Earlier, Alliance was selected for a $5.5 million award to support a taxiway extension project needed after Amazon announced that it will open a regional air hub at the airport. The taxiway extension will provide Alliance the needed infrastructure to handle additional air traffic.
