Building on the vision and the underlying goals of the 2013 Stop Six Transformation Plan, Fort Worth Housing Solutions and the City of Fort Worth plan to apply for a HUD Choice Neighborhoods Implementation Grant.

The City Council voted in favor of a resolution of support backing the application. Earlier, the city’s Housing Finance Corporation voted to support the effort. The city and the Housing Finance Corporation have proposed putting $41.8 million toward a $339 million project that would transform the Cavile Place neighborhood. The existing Cavile Place housing project is scheduled to be demolished.

The highly-competitive grant program provides up to $35 million for targeted investments in housing, supportive services and critical community improvements, all aimed at comprehensively transforming neighborhoods. The grant provides funding over six years to leverage public-private commitments.

Fort Worth Housing Solutions has assembled an experienced team of affordable-housing developers, architects, urban planners and consultants to assist in the process.

In June and July this year, the team met with Cavile residents, elected officials and other community stakeholders to provide updates and to gain insights into neighborhood history and cultural identity; community strengths, weaknesses and opportunities; and design and amenity preferences.

Redevelopment of the Stop Six neighborhood aligns with recommendations of the city’s Race and Culture Task Force by improving equity in the areas of economic development, education, health, housing and transportation.

The grant application must be submitted to HUD by Nov. 4, and HUD is expected to announce the grant recipients next April.
