Neighbors helping neighbors is a natural response after a disaster, and the City of Fort Worth is no exception. When 10 tornadoes hit Dallas County on Oct. 20, Fort Worth teams sprang into action.

The day after the tornadoes struck, a Regional Emergency Operations Center Support Team deployed 19 people for a total of 200 hours. This included five Fort Worth Office of Emergency Management personnel for damage assessment operations. One additional Emergency Management employee was deployed to Dallas County’s Emergency Operations Center for support.

Once initial damage assessments had been made, Fort Worth Code Compliance deployed five two-person damage assessment teams, one team lead and six vehicles.

Teams worked through Oct. 27 to help clear debris. Fort Worth Solid Waste Division deployed four roll-off trucks and four boom trucks with personnel to assist. The Transportation and Public Works Department supplied 28 dump trucks, one chipper truck, one lowboy trailer, 18 trailers, one chipper, 12 backhoes, seven skid steers, one excavator, one loader and 55 personnel.

Emergency operations centers in both Dallas County and the City of Dallas are operating 24/7 and have requested Fort Worth Office of Emergency Management support through the week of Oct. 28.
