In addition to classroom sessions, field excursions help develop hands-on experience for Citizen Foresters.

Looking for an opportunity to volunteer outdoors while also helping responsibly maintain and preserve Fort Worth’s urban forest? If so, it’s time to register for 2020’s Citizen Forester training.

Citizen Forester training gives participants an opportunity to become more skilled at planting, pruning and maintaining trees in an urban environment. Once certified, Citizen Foresters spend their volunteer time in public places like parks, along street medians, in school yards and other places throughout the city, putting their skills to use by taking care of the community’s public trees.

Budding arborists (or more casual tree enthusiasts) who join the Citizen Forester program in 2020 will take part in 10 sessions, held on the third Wednesday of each month from March 18-Dec. 16. Training days will begin at 9 a.m. and last until 4 p.m., with an hour for lunch.

Training locations will vary, split between the Master Gardener’s Training Room at 1801 Circle Drive, the Fort Worth Botanic Garden and a couple of field excursions to offsite locations to develop some hands-on experience.

The Citizen Forester program is sponsored by the Cross Timbers Urban Forestry Council. Apply to become a Citizen Forester and learn more about the program on their website.

Citizen Forester applications are due by Feb. 10.
