Work continues on Las Vegas Trail Community Center

Posted March 4, 2020

The first phase of renovations to a former YMCA building near Las Vegas Trail are scheduled to be complete this spring, allowing the center to begin operating in June.

City leaders have taken a close look at the area with a goal of ending the cycle of poverty, neighborhood deterioration, high unemployment and underperforming schools.

“What I love about Fort Worth is how we rally around those who are less fortunate,” said District 3 Councilmember Brian Byrd. “This community center is an example. It grew out of a partnership between the City of Fort Worth, key nonprofits and a handful of for-profit companies. The United Way of Tarrant County, Catholic Charities, YMCA, the Tarrant Area Food Bank, the Amon Carter Foundation, the Ryan Foundation, the Sid Richardson Foundation and JLL contributed significantly.”

The YMCA of Metropolitan Fort Worth had operated the building at 8201 Calmont Ave. as the Westside Y. The YMCA agreed to sell the property to the city for $242,000 plus closing costs. The property includes about 5 acres of land, two buildings totaling 12,650 feet, a parking lot and recreation amenities. A swimming pool on the site has been filled in.

Work is being done in phases: Phase I: With a budget of $1.3 million, work includes renovating the front building (about 5,625 square feet), replacing HVAC and roofs for both buildings, and park-related site improvements. Phase II: With an estimated cost of $1.9 million, work is expected to begin this fall and will include creating recreational space for senior citizens, youth programming, education and physical fitness.

The community center will be managed by LVTRise, a cooperative effort by private companies, human services organizations and government agencies to improve the lives of people living in the Las Vegas Trail area. Entities participating in the project are committed to providing resources and financial support for LVTRise’s program objectives that focus on education, public safety, delivery of social services, economic development, and health and wellness.

A Fort Worth Public Library branch will be co-located in the facility and will offer books for all ages, a computer lab and other library programs and services.

The property and improvements will be leased to LVTRise, which will in turn be responsible for providing programs, services and recreational opportunities for the community.
