Governor Abbott announces approval of emergency designation for small business disaster loans

Posted March 20, 2020

Today Governor Greg Abbott announced that the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has included the entire state of Texas in its Economic Injury Disaster Declaration.

This grants access to the SBA’s Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) program, which will provide long-term, low-interest loans to qualifying businesses across the state.

Small businesses in Texas who believe they may be eligible for an SBA EIDL should visit sba.gov/disaster where they can directly apply for assistance. The online application is the fastest method to receive a decision about loan eligibility.

“Small businesses are the foundation of our state’s economy and they need all the help they can get as the ripple effects of COVID-19 impact their everyday operations,” said Governor Abbott. “Today’s decision by the U.S. Small Business Administration to make Economic Injury Disaster Loans available to qualifying small businesses across Texas is a vital lifeline for Texas small business owners who are doing their best to adapt to these trying times.”

Local efforts for small businesses

The city, Chambers of Commerce, and community leaders are all aware of the challenges facing local businesses during this time, and are working on different options to provide assistance.

To that end, all Fort Worth businesses are encouraged to complete the city’s COVID-19 Business Survey, to help community leaders better understand the effects that current circumstances have had on business revenue, staffing, and other resources.

The survey, which was launched on Tuesday, already has more than 750 entries. In coming days, city leaders will be looking at the data to identify specific areas of need and opportunities for local and regional collaboration, and will start working towards solutions to those challenges.

“So much of Fort Worth’s character as a city is defined by its small business community, and we’re working around the clock to figure out ways to help,” said Robert Sturns, the city’s Economic Development Director.

“The ability to apply for and access these SBA funds is an important step in helping stabilize our city’s small business operations while we deal with the ongoing impact of this pandemic.”
