Fort Worth not assessing utility late fees

Knowing some customers are unexpectedly unemployed because of COVID-19, Fort Worth is suspending charging late fees on its utility bills. This measure applies to bills with due dates from April 1 through June 30. The action does not forgive past late fees owed.

On March 13, Fort Worth temporarily stopped disconnecting all active residential, commercial and industrial accounts for nonpayment. When water use is registering at a location without an active account, the water use is interrupted, pending the proper setup and activation of a water utility services account.

Customers are still responsible for making payments in a timely manner, if possible. The utility will reassess collection activities periodically based on the pandemic status, and customers remain responsible for their outstanding balances. The city will return to normal business operations of interrupting service for nonpayment at a future date.

Customers experiencing financial hardship due to the COVID-19 outbreak should call 817-392-4477 between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. to make payment arrangements.

These actions underscore how vital tap water is to maintaining and restoring health during the COVID-19 crisis.

Last December, the City Council approved a revised fee schedule that takes effect April 1. This included an increase in the late fee to 10% from 5%. This action delays putting the late fee increase into effect, but all the other fee changes take effect April 1. This includes fees related to account activations, field investigations, meter replacements and tampering or theft.
