Dozens of elementary schools receive school safety improvements

Crosswalk markings have been refreshed at a number of school campuses.

As campuses reopen, Fort Worth continues to improve routes to schools for students across the area. Over the last year, a variety of projects were completed that ranged from sidewalks and crosswalks to signage improvements and pavement markings that provide better access to schools.

In November 2019, the City Council adopted a resolution that supports development of a Vision Zero strategy to eliminate traffic fatalities and severe injuries. To support this effort, the Transportation & Public Works Department initiated a School Zone/Sign Maintenance Program in 2020 to ensure that safety for the most vulnerable roadway users is enhanced, especially as they walk to and from school.

Approximately 90 schools (primarily elementary) within the City of Fort Worth will receive updated signs, refreshed pavement markings and preventative maintenance on flashing beacons by December. The school zone/sign maintenance focuses on improving visibility of the pedestrians and ensuring signs, pavement markings and flashing beacons are in compliance with Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices standards.
