Back-to-school drive provides more than pencils and paper

The back-to-school drive-thru event distributed school supplies and food to more than 1,000 Stop Six-area students and their families.

A recent back-to-school drive-thru hosted at Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center got students in southeast Fort Worth ready for school alright. In fact, more than 20 service agencies, schools, neighborhood associations, businesses and city staff teamed up to make sure their families are ready, too.

In addition to backpacks filled with paper, pencils, erasers and other essentials for students, Stop Six-area families took home fresh fruits and vegetables, canned food, protective masks and gloves. The drive-thru event provided more than 500 families with necessities, all donated from the community.

“It would not have happened without the Tarrant Area Food Bank, Blue Zones and our volunteers,” said Victoria Leach, the community center’s recreational programmer, who organized the event. “We didn’t have this in our budget.”

Leach specifically reached out to schools and neighborhood associations near the center, who helped get the word out. More than 60 community volunteers also helped load boxes of food and other supplies to keep the drive-thru line moving quickly.

“I’m so happy we were able to provide this for our families who really need it,” Leach said.

MLK Community Center, 5565 Truman Drive, offers online classes and programs for youth and adults. Learn more on the city website or call 817-392-5966.
