Library teams with water utility to help customers seeking financial assistance

Posted Sept. 1, 2020

The Emergency Household Assistance Program of the CARES Act has funding available to assist eligible water customers who have suffered economically from the COVID-19 pandemic and are delinquent on their water account. Completion of the online CARES Act application may seem daunting, as a substantial amount of documentation must be uploaded as part of the application process.

Assistant Neighborhood Services Director Sonia Singleton said the biggest challenge for applicants seems to be getting the required documentation named appropriately and uploaded into the system.

Starting Sept. 2, the Fort Worth Public Library has printed packets that residents can take home to review, determine their responses and gather the necessary documentation before completing the online application. Packets are available at all curbside and walk-in library locations.

In addition, computers are available for public use at eight library locations during a one-hour visit. Locations open for walk-in service include Diamond Hill/Jarvis, East Regional, Golden Triangle, Northwest, Ridglea, Seminary South, Southwest and Summerglen. The hours are 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and noon to 5 p.m. Saturday.

Time is running out for customers with delinquent water accounts to make payment arrangements before water shutoffs resume on Tuesday, Sept. 8.

“There is CARES Act assistance available and we want our customers to take advantage of it,” said Water Director Chris Harder. Harder reached out to Library Director Manya Shorr for help.

“Libraries are civic spaces that provide information, resources and services to all residents,” Shorr said. “When we learned how challenging the application process for these important grants is, our library staff stepped up to create information packets residents can take home to review and not feel pressured by time limitations on visits to our buildings.”

Applicants must have been impacted by COVID-19 through loss of income, loss of job, loss of child care or anything that happened as a result of the pandemic. Find additional information about the assistance program and the online application. Customers residing in the City of Fort Worth should apply using the link for the Coronavirus Relief Fund link. The Community Services Block Grant link is for Tarrant County residents.
