The Neighborhood Education Office works directly with residents in the community, providing education on City services, as well as support for neighborhood associations.

Neighborhood leaders can hear updates on recycling, civic participation and other topics at the next session of Neighborhood University, 8 a.m.-noon Feb. 23 at Hazel Harvey Peace Center for Neighborhoods, 818 Missouri Ave.

Neighborhood Education offers educational presentations to neighborhood associations, schools and community groups by request. Presentations last about 30 minutes each and are offered free of charge.

Education Programs for Adults

Caring for Cowtown Air – Do you know where air pollution comes from? Learn about ozone formation, effects on your health, simple ways to prevent pollution and what the EPA and City of Fort Worth are doing about possible gas well emissions.

Conquer Your Crud! – What are those rectangular holes in the side of the street curb? And where do they lead? Get answers to these questions plus learn how to get rid of old paint, motor oil and other “crud” that lurks in your storage area.

Fair Housing – Don’t get taken when buying a home. Learn to recognize housing discrimination, avoid predatory lending practices and find help if you need it. You’ll also learn about two types of neighborhood associations in Fort Worth and the benefits of each.
 
Keeping Our Lakes Clean – Fort Worth’s beautiful lakes are an asset to the community, but some are polluted. Can you guess the top six sources of water pollution in Fort Worth? Even if you don’t live near a lake, you can still help prevent water pollution.

Recycle Right! – This hands-on recycling and garbage presentation helps you know what can and cannot be recycled in Fort Worth’s blue cart. See how recycling right can lead to less garbage, save landfill space and possibly save money on your garbage bill.

Education Programs for Children

“Captain Crud and the Cruddies”– This storm water education program teaches students about storm drains and water pollution as well as safety and proper disposal of household hazardous waste.

Career Days – Adaptable to different grade levels, this presentation features typical and not-so-typical career opportunities with the City of Fort Worth, plus questions and answers from real firefighters, crime lab technicians, animal caretakers and more.

“PAWS: Pets are Worth it!” – Students learn how to take care of their pets, the City of Fort Worth laws that apply to pet owners and what to do if you are attacked by an aggressive dog.

“Recycle Right” – This hands-on lesson teaches children the importance of recycling by letting them participate in a sorting exercise that demonstrates how easy it is to recycle and reduce waste that goes to the landfill.

Summer Reading Program – Children learn about our local libraries and the activities they provide, as well as the importance of reading.   

Association Support

Neighborhood educators help neighborhoods form new associations and support existing groups with information, referrals and problem solving.
