Kristen Loomis

Every month, Animal Care & Control features a volunteer who's making a difference for the animals at the shelter.

Meet the June Volunteer of the Month, Kristen Loomis.

How long have you volunteered with the City of Fort Worth Animal Shelter?

Been volunteering at the shelter since April 2018.

What advice would you give to volunteers who have just started out?

My best piece of advice would likely be to make sure you’re comfortable with what you’re doing and where you’re doing it. Both the location and what you’re doing there will impact your experiences.

What qualities make a good volunteer?

Compassion, empathy, dedication and commitment.

Why did you decide to start volunteering with the Fort Worth Animal Shelter?

I started volunteering with my daughter because she was given the expectation of finding something to do over the summer after school was out. I have always had a love for animals and once I found the right fit for me regarding location it was easy to settle in and I feel like it gives me purpose.

Is there an aspect of our mission that motivates you to want to volunteer?

I appreciate that Fort Worth Animal Care & Control makes an effort to see the animals go into good homes or to work with rescue organizations rather than just opting for euthanizations when other shelters would take the easy road!

What are the social benefits of volunteering?

The social benefits for me is getting to interact with potential adopters and hopefully help them find the right fit or suggest options if our available animals aren’t the right ones. The staff at Hulen Petsmart, both the store and the adoption center, are friendly and helpful.

How does volunteering impact your personal growth?

For me personally I get a sense of fulfillment from both spending time with the animals and from helping match them to a family. Interacting with the staff and the potential adopters is great socialization. It makes me want to get out of the house and be involved.
