Why is this important?
Fort Worth’s streets should be safe for people of all ages and abilities, whether traveling as pedestrians, by bicycle, by transit, or by motor vehicle. The Fort Worth Police Department’s Traffic Division has the primary responsibility of maintaining safe passage on main thoroughfares throughout the city. Analyzing accident data allows the Police and other departments such as Transportation and Public Works to identify potential hazards and find solutions. For the purpose of this measure, roadway accidents are divided into four categories: injury accidents, pedestrian accidents, traffic fatalities, and pedestrian fatalities.
As a result of various factors, population growth being the most significant, the City of Fort Worth has experienced an overall increase in each accident category. The number of injury accidents increased 13.9 percent, traffic fatalities increased 15.8 percent, pedestrian accidents increased 9.4 percent, and pedestrian fatalities increased 32.3 percent while population increased approximately 9.5 percent between 2012 and 2016.
