General Election Information

Fort Worth General Elections for City Council are held in May of each odd-numbered year.  The May uniform election date authorized by state law is the first Saturday of the month. Therefore, the 2025 Election will be held on Saturday, May 3, 2025.

Filing Period for a Place on the Ballot

The Texas Election Code sets the filing deadline for a place on the ballot of an election on a uniform election date at the 78th day before Election Day (Section 143.007(c)) and provides that the first day to file an application is 30th day before the filing deadline (Section 143.007(a)).

The filing deadline/78th day before the May 3rd election date is Friday, February 14, 2025 by 5:00 p.m.**

The first day for filing an application is the 30th day preceding, which is Wednesday, January 15, 2025.

** Regular business hours for the City Secretary’s Office are Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the office closed for lunch from noon to 1 p.m. each day. The filing location is the City Secretary’s Office, 100 Energy Way, 7th Floor, Fort Worth, TX 76102. **

 

 

Candidate Qualifications

  • Must be a United States citizen;
  • Must be at least 21 years of age by May 13, 2025 (date of canvassing/first date of the term to be filled);
  • Must be a qualified voter;
  • Must have been a registered voter as of February 14, 2025 in the jurisdiction in which you are seeking election;
    • Texas Election Code § 13.143 states that your voter registration will become effective 30 days after it is received or on your 18th birthday, whichever is later. Your registration must be effective on or before an election day in order to vote in that election.

  • Must have resided continuously:
    • in the state for at least one year prior to the filing deadline (i.e., since at least February 14, 2024),

      and

    • in the Council District for which you are seeking election for at least 180 days before the first day of the filing period (i.e. since at least July 19, 2024);
  • Must not have been determined mentally incapacitated by a final judgement of a court; and
  • Must not have been finally convicted of a felony from which you have not been pardoned or otherwise released from the resulting disabilities. 

Filing Requirements for Candidates

The application for place on the ballot must be received by the February 14, 2025 filing deadline and be accompanied by a $100.00 filing fee (cash, cashier’s check, campaign account check, or certified check [no personal checks]). In lieu of the filing fee, a candidate may submit a petition pursuant to City of Fort Worth Charter, Chapter IV, Section 2. The minimum number of signatures required for a place on the ballot for each of the respective offices are:
