Red and Julie Goldstein

FEBRUARY 2025 - Red Goldstein is no stranger to the life-changing impact that adopted pets can have. As the Chair of the Humane Society of North Texas Board of Directors, Red and his wife, Julie, know firsthand how much love and joy a pet can bring to a home. Back in 2010, they adopted two furry friends—Wilson and Sassie—through the Fort Worth Animal Care & Control (FWACC) PetSmart Adoption Center at the Hulen location. Since then, these two pets have been not just companions, but an essential part of their family, helping them heal and grow in unexpected ways.

Wilson and Sassy have been a source of comfort, joy, and unconditional love for Red and Julie. The couple shared how adopting these pets changed their lives and helped them through difficult times, emphasizing the healing power of a pet’s presence. Today, both Wilson and Sassy are happy, healthy, and as loving as ever, proof that adopting a pet can truly transform lives.

The Hulen & Alliance Adoption Centers: Finding Homes, Saving Lives

What makes Red and Julie’s story even more powerful is the context in which it happens. The PetSmart Charities Everyday Adoption Center (EAC) initiative is a nationwide effort to help save homeless pets and connect them with loving families. Here in Fort Worth, two EACs in partnership with FWACC are making it easier than ever for local residents to find their next best friend. These adoption centers are conveniently located inside PetSmart stores — one at the Hulen location in South Fort Worth and another at the Alliance location in North Fort Worth.

The adoption center at Hulen is one of the longest-running EACs, opening its doors in April 2010. Since then, nearly 26,000 animals have been adopted through the center, giving them a brighter future in loving homes. The Alliance center followed in November 2011 and has since placed over 21,000 animals into new homes.

Both centers operate every day during regular store hours and offer a comfortable, welcoming space for pets and potential adopters. From kennels for adult dogs, puppies, and small dogs, to a cat adoption area and play spaces for dogs, there’s something for every type of pet. The centers also feature meet-and-greet areas where potential adopters can interact with the animals and find the perfect match.

Why Adoption Matters

Adopting from the Everyday Adoption Centers is more than just giving a pet a new home — it’s part of a nationwide effort to address pet homelessness and help animals find a place where they are loved and cared for. For people like Red and Julie, it’s a reminder of the deep bond that can form between humans and their adopted pets. These two pets — Wilson and Sassy — are a testament to the life-changing power of adoption.
