It's wheels up for Wheeler!

Although Wheeler has needed to make a couple of pit stops on his way home, he’s been met with unwavering compassion and dedication every step of the way.

There he was – a young mixed-breed dog – caught in a January storm and struggling to walk as his hind legs dragged behind him.

Like many abandoned animals, he was found on the side of the road – confused, scared and vulnerable. Thankfully, he was taken to the Fort Worth’s North Animal Campus to receive immediate care and shelter.

It’s unclear if the young pup was born without the ability to walk or if he was previously injured. Regardless, shelter staff worked quickly to make him comfortable by fitting him with a wheelchair. As they watched him gleefully wheel around, they gave him the nickname “Wheeler.”

In the midst of adversity, Wheeler’s resilient spirit became apparent to everyone he came in contact with. Staff describe him as the kind of dog that “doesn’t have a mean bone in his body” and is “always happy to see everyone.”

But even with his lovable face and positive light, Wheeler’s chances of adoption were not looking bright. The reality was, he wouldn’t be ready for adoption until receiving the proper medical attention needed to set him up for a better quality of life.

Pit stops to a positive outcome

To help Wheeler find a loving home where he can truly thrive, the North Animal Campus team worked in cooperation with their rescue partner Cowtown Friends and North Texas Community Foundation.

Through a rescue organization in the Northeast, they were then able to locate the best medical/surgical care and adoptive family for little Wheeler — and provide a private transport to get him there.

His new family is experienced in adopting specially abled animals and plans to give Wheeler the care and attention he needs to be an even happier pup.

Rallying behind Wheeler

Stories like Wheeler’s often highlight the resilience and unmatched spirit of furry friends that overcome challenging life events. But his rescue story also speaks to the level of community support that is needed to save animals’ lives.

With special help from a village of animal-loving humans in Fort Worth and beyond, this kindhearted canine is getting a new leash on life.
