Property Waste and Debris

Ensuring a Clean, Safe Community for All

When trash and debris accumulate, it’s more than just an eyesore — it can create serious health hazards.

Items like old furniture, appliances, tires, car parts and other junk left outside can pose risks and are not permitted.

If a violation is noticed, the property owner will receive a warning notice with clear instructions on how to resolve the issue within a specified timeframe. Failure to take action can result in a fine of up to $2,000.

For persistent violations, the case may be escalated to the Building Standards Commission, City Council or District Court for further action.

Additionally, if the City is required to clean up the property, the associated costs may be placed as a lien against the property. Let’s work together to keep our community clean and safe!

Why is trash and debris harmful?

Items like old furniture, appliances, tires, car parts and other junk left outside can pose several risks to both people and the environment. Here’s why:

  1. Health Hazards: Old furniture and appliances can harbor mold, bacteria and pests like rodents or insects, which can spread diseases. Tires, especially when left in damp areas, can collect water and become breeding grounds for mosquitoes, including those that carry diseases like West Nile virus or Zika.

  2. Safety Concerns: Large, discarded items like car parts or broken appliances can create tripping hazards, especially for children, the elderly or those with mobility challenges. Sharp edges or broken pieces may also cause injuries.

  3. Environmental Impact: Left unchecked, discarded tires, appliances and other junk can leach harmful chemicals into the soil or water supply. Appliances often contain toxic substances like refrigerants or oils that can pollute the environment.

  4. Attracting Vandalism or Crime: A property with visible junk or discarded items may attract illegal activities or vandalism. It can signal neglect or disrepair, which some individuals may take advantage of.

  5. Aesthetic and Community Well-Being: Accumulated junk is not only unsightly, but it also lowers the overall aesthetic of the neighborhood, potentially affecting property values and community pride.

By keeping items like these properly disposed of, we help protect the health and safety of everyone in the community and preserve the environment for future generations.
