One the evening of Feb. 9, 1964, Ed Sullivan introduced the Beatles to America as teens across the country were glued to their TV sets. The appearance sparked a movement of musical creativity across the country.

In Fort Worth, the music scene showed a new vibrancy in its songwriting and musicianship. The seeds of the counterculture were planted, flourished and nurtured, with Fort Worth and Dallas playing a pivotal role.

About the Author

Mark A. Nobles is a six-generation Texan born on Fort Worth’s infamous Jacksboro Highway. He proudly claims blood and kinship with Thunder Road’s gamblers, outlaws and wastrels. Besides the nonfiction book Fort Worth’s Rock and Roll Roots, he has published his first novel, We’re for Smoke. Planned for publication this spring is his novella Chalk Mountain.  

He was nominated for a Pushcart Prize and his short stories have appeared in numerous literary magazines and anthologies including Cowboy Jamboree, the Dead Mule School of Southern Literature, Gimmick Press, Road Kill Vol. 4, Not One of Us and others.
