D Michelle O'Neal was born in Fort Worth to young parents in the early 1960s and grew up in the area with one sister and five brothers. By age 13, she was consumed with true crime stories, such as Kidnap and Helter Skelter.

Although determined to process crime scenes, getting married at 17 delayed those career goals. Yearning for an education, as a single mother she spent 11 years pursuing a bachelor’s of science degree while working as a lab technician at Forensic Consultant Services.

Michelle has amassed a 34-year career in forensic science. Living much of Megan Brook's life from her debut novel Shambles, O’Neal currently serves as a Senior Forensic Chemist at the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office.
