Candleridge Park is located in far southwest Fort Worth. The park’s origins were entangled in a “Catch-22” arrangement between the City and the Candle Ridge Development Corporation, the developer of the Candle Ridge Addition. The corporation was seeking annexation of its 1,100-acre addition into the City of Fort Worth. The City Council had delayed approval of allocating the city’s share of a $1 million infrastructure project for the development pending the park board’s approval of the gift of a 7-acre tract for park purposes. Representatives from the development sought assurances from the park board that the 7-acre tract would be developed as the concept of a large green belt running through the development was a key component of the addition’s design. At a meeting in January 1975, Park Director Campbell told the board that he was “‘pretty sure’” that the department had funds to develop the initial segment of the park, estimated to cost $38,000. The board approved the donation. This was the first phase of what grew to be a 125-acre linear park. Candleridge Park opened to the public in June 1981 and included a 4.5 acre lake, jogging trails and an exercise course as well as softball and soccer fields. Under the 1998 capital Improvement Plan, the park received playground renovations. A low water crossing was added in 2006-07. Today the park also contains 2.51 miles of multi-use trails.
