History

Coventry Hills Park was donated to the City through the Parkland Dedication Program in 2001.

Recreation

The playground just south of Shiver is an HOA-owned and maintained facility. Open space mowing provides passive recreation areas along the riparian stretch, while the buffer protects the banks of the creek from erosion. A cement trail runs through the park connecting it to Ninnie Baird Park to the north and Arcadia Trail North Park to the south.

Geology

The geology of the park is fully in the Pawpaw Formation, Weno Limestone, and Denton Clay, which is comprised of alternating layers of limestone, clay and marl derived from the Cretaceous Period.

Soils

The soils are of the Sanger and Slidell Series which are calcareous clay soils that shrink and swell with moisture or lack thereof.

Ecology

The greenbelt is maintained with a vegetated buffer along the creek. The vegetated buffer slows flood waters and allows sediment to drop from the water column. The creek is intermittent, meaning it flows during the rainy season but can dry out in the summer.

The park is essentially a prairie wetland, riparian corridor. There are two ponds with shoreline wetland vegetation. Although it appears 'overgrown', this wetland is home to a diversity of aquatic species including several species of turtles, dragonflies, damselflies, butterflies, mosquitofish, bluegill (most of these species eat mosquito larvae!) and catfish.

The aquatic plants:

• filter water,
• protect the banks against erosion,
• provide habitat for a diversity of wildlife,
• help with carbon sequestration and oxygen production, and
• cool the overall ambient air temperature.

Lend a Hand

There are several ways you can volunteer to help at your park. Register with Keep Fort Worth Beautiful to conduct a litter pick-up or make iNaturalist observations of the biodiversity within the park. View animal, plant and insect species observed at Coventry Hills Greenbelt Park and make some of your own observations through iNaturalist. See link under the "Related information" Section.
