Fun Facts & History

On April 11, 1957, the park board voted to accept Block 19 of the Linwood Addition for park purposes. The ten-acre tract was bordered on the east by Wimberly Drive and by Wingate along a portion of its southern boundary.  Improvements made to the park over the years include playground renovations in 2004 that were funded through a grant from the U.S. Department of Interior’s Urban Park and Recreation Recovery and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Community Development Block Grant funds.  Originally known as Linwood Park, in April 2012 it was renamed Linwood-Jesse D. Sandoval Park in honor of a long-time Linwood resident. Sandoval (1926-2010) was a World War II veteran and a community activist who worked to abolish the poll tax, register voters, to establish single-member council districts, and advocated for bi-lingual education. He was Tarrant County’s first Hispanic precinct chair, served on the City’s Human Relations Commission, and on the Building and Housing Standards Commission.
