Carver Heights neighborhood was developed in the mid-twentieth century in East Fort Worth, and Martin Luther King Park is located in the middle of the neighborhood. The park was named for African American civil rights leaders Martin Luther King, Jr. (1929-1968), a Baptist minister whose non-violence stance in the face of opposition to desegregation caught the attention of the world and earned him a Nobel Peace Prize. Tragically King was assassinated in 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee. The land for the park was acquired a year after his death. In 1973, the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center was opened in the park. Playground improvements were undertaken in 2003 with funding from Community Development Block Grant Funds. In 2006, Park & Recreation Department staff undertook several Small Capital Projects in city parks, including walk and trail improvements in Martin Luther King Park.
