Fun facts & History

The Ridglea Addition, located in west Fort Worth, was designed by the landscape architecture firm of Hare and Hare (the same firm that was serving as the city’s park consultant) for the Anderson-Berney Realty Company. The plan was approved by the city’s Plan Commission on December 31, 1928. The design took advantage of the area’s rolling terrain and incorporated a golf course (now the location of the Ridglea Country Club) as well as a few open spaces, including a designated park near the north end of the addition bounded by Highland (now Curzon), Rosemont, and Ridglea avenues.

The Ridglea Addition was annexed into Fort Worth in 1944. The annexation was contested by some Ridglea residents but upheld by the Texas Supreme Court in 1945. With annexation, the park, referred to as Ridglea Park, became property of the city of Fort Worth. On April 6, 1948, the park board voted to rename the park “Morris E. Berney Park” in recognition of Mr. Berney’s service as president of the Board of Park Commissioners from 1925 to 1945 and for his role in the development of the Ridglea Addition. Mr. Berney died on February 27, 1948 from injuries he received in an accident. The park department experienced its greatest expansion to that date under his stewardship. By 1957, the small park had some playground equipment and a softball diamond.
