Fun facts

Thousands of people across Texas are familiar with “Mrs. Baird’s Bread,” a staple of the Texas dinner table. Ninia Lilla “Ninnie” Baird (1869-1961) began baking bread out of her Fort Worth home in 1908 to support her family. The business grew and Baird was able to construct a separate building for her business. From this beginning, Mrs. Baird’s Bread expanded to Dallas, Houston, and Abilene, and eventually consisted of nine plants and became the largest independent bakery in the United States. Forty-eight years after her death, a 15.5 acre park was acquired and named in her honor. The City Council accepted the dedication of the parcel along with facility improvements from D.R. Horton-Texas, Ltd., Engle Homes/Texas, Inc., TOUSA Homes, Inc., and Morrison Homes of Texas, Inc. The improvements constructed by the developers included a playground, 200 linear feet of trail, grading, turf establishment and other improvements valued at $156,000, exceeding the park development fee requirements. Previously, the developers had approached the Parks and Community Services Department to apply for a grant for the construction of a new recreational trail in the Heritage Addition, which was located in a rapidly growing area. In 2005, the City was awarded a $92,160 grant from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Through the funds, PACS completed construction of approximately 3,225 linear feet of loop trail, three picnic tables, and three benches. For their part, the developers expended $41,245.30 on a pedestrian bridge, trail grading, erosion control and seeding, a stone retaining wall, and other improvements.  The park is located north of Shiver Road, south of Heritage Trace Parkway, and west of Ray White Road.
