Oakmont Park is located in far southwest Fort Worth not far from Benbrook Lake and south of the Clear Fork of the Trinity River. Its acquisition grew out of a study conducted by the Fort Worth Planning Commission on greenbelt preservation along the river. The river corridor contained a bluff and was located at the junction of the East Cross Timbers and the Fort Worth Prairie Region with mature trees along the entire stretch of the Clear Fork. Oakmont Joint Ventures controlled all of the remaining land along the east bank of the Trinity River from Meadows West Park to Pecan Valley Golf Course. On December 9, 1980, the City Council approved the dedication of 127.2 acres for park purposes. This tract was donated by Oakmont Joint Ventures and became known as Oakmont Park.
The park was held in reserve status until funding could be secured for improvements. In 1996, Oakmont Park was awarded funding for improvements that included off-street parking, a low water crossing, a playground area, walkways, and picnic table/bench areas. Other substantial improvements, including playground construction, concrete sidewalks, handicap ramps, picnic table slabs, and irrigation were constructed in 2009. In 2014, Oakmont was one of two parks chosen for Macy’s “Heart Your Park” program. In March of 2014, Macy’s customers could donate one dollar or more for the parks and Macy’s would match the amount up to $250,000.
