Fun facts and History

Oakhurst Scenic Drive was constructed in 1936-37 with funds provided by the WPA and under the supervision of the park department and its consultant, S. Herbert Hare. It runs at the foot of the bluffs between East Belknap Street and Watauga Road. To add to its scenic qualities, large boulders were placed along the road at various intervals. It was Hare’s plan to connect the road to another parkway to Trail Drivers Park, located north of the Fort Worth Stockyards. That parkway never came to fruition. The park department maintained Oakhurst Scenic Drive at least until the 1950s. Hare also envisioned that all of the land between the road and Trinity River would become parkland. Although that did not happen, the creation of Riverside Park on the lower segment of Oakhurst Scenic Drive fulfilled part of that vision. The park was acquired in 1974 and contains nearly 31 acres. It also has playgrounds and grills.
