Fun facts

The Westbrook Development Corporation was the developer of the South Creek Addition. Parkland of 6.3 acres in this addition was dedicated by the City Council on March 27, 1984. Because the residential area was highly developed at the time of the park’s dedication, the City Council approved funding for the preparation of development plans for the park eight months later. As the name implies, there is a creek within the park as well as a trail.

Recreation

The park has a 0.10 mile cement trail to the playground and the stream. There is a small pond at the park with a cement spillway. A playground with swings, picnic tables and benches overlook the pond and stream.

Geology

The northwest portion of the park lies within the Pawpaw, Weno Limestone and Denton Clay geologic formations. Pawpaw is a calcareous ledge-forming marl interbedded with limestone and clay. The majority of the park lies within the Grayson Marl and Main Street Limestone of the Cretaceous Period. Grayson Marl consists of greenish-gray thinly interbedded limestone with nodular bits of shale, sand and fossiliferous material. The Main Street Limestone is hard, thin interbedded gray and white layers.

Soils

The park is mostly comprised of Frio-Urban land complex soils. This complex is made up of deep, nearly level, well drained soils and areas of Urban land on the flood plains of small streams. The upland portion of the park is Sanger soils, which were formed in calcareous clayey marine sediment deposited during the Cretaceous Period.

Ecology

The stream that runs through the park originates in the Candleridge and Wedgwood South neighborhoods. It flows through Candleridge Park before bisecting South Creek Park. From South Creek Park, the stream flows through Woodmont Park and Westcreek Park before it eventually flows into Sycamore Creek further northeast. Due to the aquatic environment, many exciting wetland species are present. Look for a good diversity of damselflies and dragonflies including Aztec dancer, powdered dancer, and desert firetail. In the pond, you may spot red-eared sliders, and along the shoreline, you may see wading birds during migration including pectoral sandpipers. Upland from the stream, there may be a colorful spring wildflower display.
