Fun facts

Summer Creek Ranch Park was initially acquired in 2000 when the City Council accepted 5.052 acres of land in the Summer Creek Ranch Addition from Lumberman’s Investment Corporation. In 2008, it received an addition of 1.175 acres from Meritage Homes of Texas, L.P., in accordance with the Neighborhood and Community Park Dedication Policy. The developer also contributed funding for the parcel’s improvement.

Recreation

A 0.25 mile cement trail parallels Bentwater Lane, passing two ponds and connects to C.P. Hadley Park to the north.

Geology

The geology is Grayson Marl and Main Street Limestone of the Cretaceous. Grayson Marl consists of greenish-gray thinly interbedded limestone with nodular bits of shale, sand and fossiliferous material. The Main Street Limestone is hard, thin interbedded gray and white layers.

Soils

The park lies completely within the Slidell soil series, which consists of very deep, moderately well drained, very slowly permeable soils that formed in calcareous, clayey sediments.

Ecology

The creek bisecting the park is unnamed. It drains into Benbrook Lake, less than 2 miles west as the crow flies. The park hosts two ponds that are water features, complete with a fountain to aerate the water. The shoreline of the ponds hosts aquatic wetland species and some adjacent ephemeral wetlands where water collects seasonally. The ponds are home to wading shorebirds and some migratory waterfowl. Look for turtles basking in the sun or with their heads peering slightly above the water's surface.
