Trinity Bluff Park is located in downtown Fort Worth. As the name implies, the reserve park sits atop a bluff overlooking the Trinity River. The densely wooded area harkens to the historic view that our predecessors had millennia ago. The West Fork of the Trinity River would have been a green, wooded riparian corridor through the upland prairies of what was to become Fort Worth. This fertile wooded river, its floodplain, and the surrounding prairies supported abundant hunting opportunities for Native Americans and it soon proved to be irresistible to settlers as well. In 1849, Fort Worth was established as one in a series of frontier defenses. The fort was abandoned in 1853 and Fort Worth became a town. The bluff is Fort Worth Limestone and Duck Creek Formation; alternating thin layers of marl and limestone. In these formations, fossils such as ammonites, echinoids, and Gryphea may be found. The soils are Aledo-Bolar limey clay typically found on Fort Worth Prairie sites. The soils of Trinity Bluff are more erodible than a typical Fort Worth Prairie site due to the slope.
