In the mid-1990s, residents near Our Lady of Victory School became concerned about a blighted area along West Biddison Street that was adjacent to an abandoned rail line and south of the school. Through a partnership that included the Parks and Community Services Department (previous department name) and ReLeaf Tarrant County, the Southside Alliance, Our Lady of Victory Neighborhood Association, and the Rosemont Voters League, one hundred and twenty donated trees were planted along the rail line creating a small urban forest. In 2010, the nearly six-acre tract was officially designated as a city park.
Opened in 2017, Victory Forest Community Center is situated at the north end of the cement trail, which winds through the trees 0.75 miles south to Willing Avenue. The community center is state of the art and offers nice meeting, exercise and recreation accommodations (including computer lab, dance room, fitness center - Gold Tier gymnasium, kitchen, patio, playground, playcare) The community center is also available for rent and hosts youth sports leagues and after-school programs.
The winding cement trail camouflages the slight topographic rise that was once a straight railroad track bed. Bits of coal can still be observed from days past when the site had a more industrial life. A thorough history of the area and the railroad tracks can be read on the Hometown by Handlebar blog.
