Fun Facts and History

Woodland Springs Park is a linear park featuring six ponds with fountains. A trail links the ponds together allowing for nearly a one-mile walk from the north to the south ends of the park. The soil is Blackland Prairie clay that historically was very productive for crops. Derived from calcareous marl and marine sediments, it's as though you are stepping back in time millions of years. This soil supports prairie species such as big bluestem, little bluestem, indiangrass, sideoats grama, maximilian sunflower, sundrops, and many other showy prairie flowers. The ponds support aquatic life such as a multitude of dragonfly and damselfly species, frogs and other amphibians, reptiles and fish. Look for some of your favorite birds when visiting the park.
