Pedestrian Safety
Learning and practicing proper pedestrian habits are important life skills. With students returning to school, keep an eye out for the school zone flashing lights both in the morning and in the afternoon. Watch a Pedestrian Safety video and learn tips to help students get to school and back home safely. Together, we can make our community a safe place to live.
Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon
The City of Fort Worth has pedestrian activated flashing beacon across multiple school intersections across the city. A Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB) uses bright yellow lights that flash to alert drivers when a pedestrian is ready to cross the street.
Pedestrian Hybrid Beacons
A Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon (PHB) stops road traffic and allows people walking, rolling, and biking to cross safely. A PHB uses a YELLOW-RED-FLASHING RED sequence to alert drivers that people need to cross the road. A PHB is a cross between a regular traffic light and a stop sign. People crossing will see walk and don’t walk signs similar to a regular traffic light, and people driving will see flashing yellow warning lights, red lights like a regular traffic light, and flashing red lights, which are treated like a stop sign.
Requesting Crossing Guard Services
The City of Fort Worth currently provides crossing guard services to 14 districts, with schools located within Fort Worth city limits. Crossing guard services are provided during school drop-off and pick-up hours during the school calendar year and during Summer School as needed. All elementary and middle schools (public, charter, private) within Fort Worth city limits are eligible to request school crossing guard services.
A school principal is required to submit the School Crossing Guard Request Form for an intersection to be considered for crossing guard services.
