Contractor Meters

Contractor water meters are used to measure the volume of water withdrawn from fire hydrants. These meters are primarily used for construction, landscape operations or special events.

The meters are billed for water use at the commercial water rate

Contractor Meters

Step 1.Completing application

Individuals or companies wanting a contractor meter must complete these steps:

  • Complete and sign contractor meter application, which includes agreeing to terms and conditions.  
  • Pay a $4,400 deposit .
  • Provide proof of a backflow assembly by entering test results into the VEPO, LLC reporting system.
  • Only RPZ backflow assemblies and/or air gaps are allowed on Fort Worth fire hydrants.

These steps are handled Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.*:

Step 2.Picking up the meter

  • Meter Services Section issues the contractor meters once it receives the completed paperwork from Water Customer Service.
  • Contractor meters can be picked up and returned between 9 a.m. and noon Monday through Friday, excluding holidays, at:

Step 3.Requirements

  • Term of use is for one year.  
  • The meter is only for use on City of Fort Worth fire hydrants.

Step 4.Billing inquiries

Water Customer Service is available for billing inquiries from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding holidays.

Backflow Protection

Requirements

  • Any person/company that enters an agreement with Fort Worth for a contractor water meter is responsible for ensuring the meter connection is protected against backflow. Meters must be protected by an RPZ backflow assembly or air gap.
  • The assembly must be tested upon installation, repair or relocation. Contractors are required to submit backflow test results into the VEPO, LLC reporting system
  • Failure to comply may result in contract cancellation as well as the enforcement actions as listed in Ordinance 12274. Fort Worth will perform unscheduled inspections to ensure contractors are compliant.
