Posted Feb. 20, 2014

[Velma T. McEwen]

In honor of Black History Month, each week in February Fort Worth Flashback will take a look at the role of African-American leaders in our city’s history.

Velma T. McEwen, Fort Worth Urban League Executive, attended a Texas Business College graduation ceremony at St. Andrew’s Methodist Episcopal Church on Jan. 29, 1954. She is shaking hands with President Dennis of Texas Business College.

McEwen was born Oct. 19, 1919, in Jackson, Miss. She was one of nine children born to the Rev. Tolbert McEwen and Julia Clay McEwen. She graduated from Saint Augustine’s College in Raleigh, N.C., and moved to Washington, D.C., during the Second World War.

Strode retired from the Department of Labor in 1981 and moved to Cleveland, where she lived until her death on June 7, 2011.

The Fort Worth Library has approximately 10,000 items pertaining to the history of Fort Worth and Tarrant County. These items include city and county government documents, newspapers, directories, cemetery association records, maps as well as popular and scholarly books written by local authors or about local subjects.
