Fort Worth Crime Control and Prevention District continuation election to be held July 14

Posted April 3, 2020

Gov. Greg Abbott has approved the Fort Worth Crime Control and Prevention District’s (CCPD) request to conduct its continuation election on July 14 rather than May 2 as originally planned.

“The current public health emergency makes a May election unwise and potentially unsafe, and waiting until November is not a legally available option,” said Mayor and CCPD Board President Betsy Price. “We appreciate Gov. Abbott granting a special election on July 14 for the continuation of the Fort Worth Crime Control and Prevention District.”

Fort Worth sought permission for the special election on the issue of continuation to be held on an earlier non-uniform date before the November uniform election.

The Crime Control and Prevention District and its voter-approved ½-cent sales tax is set to expire Sept. 30, 2020, unless voters authorize their continuation before that date. Each of the four previous continuation elections has been approved by a majority of more than 75% of participating voters.

If a successful continuation election is not held by Sept. 30, the district would be dissolved. Because the dissolution date occurs before the November uniform election date, the election could not be moved to November under the emergency order that allowed other planned May elections to be moved to the fall.
