At first there were just one or two. Then a dozen. By the end of March, more than 60 tiny fairy gardens had sprung up at the base of trees and near walking trails in Fort Worth’s Overton Park.

The proliferation of diminutive dwellings appears related to the COVID-19 outbreak, as hundreds of Tanglewood Elementary students look for something fun to do after school was closed as a result of the pandemic.

The proliferation of elfin houses was first reported in the Glenwood Gazette, a startup newspaper created by two Tanglewood fourth-graders who refuse to let the virus stop them from learning. Their inaugural edition also featured a front-page interview with a neighborhood doctor and nurse who answered questions about hand-washing and social distancing.

News of fairy gardens popping up in the park has brought dozens of Tanglewood residents out for a look — while practicing proper social distancing, of course.

“I think it is so fun to see everyone’s creativity come out to spread some joy to neighbors,” said resident Leah Shepard, who has posted several photos of the itty-bitty abodes on Tanglewood Neighborhood Association’s Facebook page.
