Place is a central component to Bryan Washington’s writing. He will explore the meaning of places in our lives to the stories we tell, as well as discuss his book, Memorial, at a special event 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, at the Fort Worth Public Library-Central, 500 W. Third St.

A Q&A session and book-signing will follow the discussion. The event is free, but those planning to attend are encouraged to register.

Washington’s body of work revolves around his hometown of Houston.

“Every story we tell is rooted in a moment, and every moment is rooted in the geography we experience it,” he said,

His short-story collection, Lot, was named a The New York Times Notable Book of 2019, was winner of the Dylan Thomas prize and the 2020 Lambda Literary Award in Gay Fiction. The work was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle’s John Leonard Award, the PEN Bingham Award and the Aspen Words Literary Prize.

Washington’s first novel, Memorial, is a funny and insightful love story between a young biracial couple, using humor to examine vulnerability, becoming who you’re supposed to be, and the limits of love. The book is a Good Morning America November book club pick and was considered for the 2021 Andrew Carnegie Medals for Excellence in Fiction.
