FWPD issues statement on recent violent crimes

The Fort Worth Police Department issued a statement on Monday in response to a spate of violent crimes:

Over the weekend, the Fort Worth Police Department responded to several shooting calls, which resulted in homicide, including a hostage situation. There is no excuse for this unnecessary violence, and our hearts go out to the victims and their families.

We would like to assure our community that we are working diligently to bring those responsible before the criminal justice system, and we are working tirelessly to make Fort Worth the safest major city in the U.S.

The mission of the Fort Worth Police Department is to safeguard the lives and property of those we serve, to reduce the incidence and fear of crime, and to enhance public safety through partnering and building trust with our community.

In April 2022, FWPD implemented the Fort Worth Safe Violent Crime Strategy, and we have seen progress. As of Aug. 23, 2022, we saw a 5.5% year-to-date decrease in homicides, 24% decrease in nonfatal shootings, and a 23% decrease in overall aggravated assaults. Unfortunately, we have seen a 2.4% increase in robberies and, after this weekend, our year-to-date homicide rate is now one higher than last year.

We have a lot of work to do and our mission will be accomplished with the continued commitment from the FWPD officers and professional staff, the community, our external partners, other City of Fort Worth departments and supportive leaders like Mayor Mattie Parker, City Manager David Cooke, Assistant City Manager Fernando Costa, as well as our City Council.

By working with the community, we are gaining valuable information about people and places that contribute to violent crime. Our officers continue working hard to ensure our community is made safer every day. Their efforts have been absolutely inspiring.
