UPDATE: The article has been updated to clarify that the action taken was to honor Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta, but not formally rename the street segments.

The City Council voted unanimously to designate two Fort Worth street segments to honor a pair of civil rights icons.

Council approved the honorary recognition of the portion of State Highway 183 including Northeast and Northwest 28th Street from Beach Street to U.S. 287 Business/North Main Street with additional street sign markings recognizing Cesar Chavez. The portion of State Highway 183 including Northwest 28th Street and Ephriham Avenue from U.S. 287 Business/North Main Street to State Highway 199/Jacksboro Highway will bare street sign markings in honor of Dolores Huerta.

The honorary recognitions will salute the legacies of Chavez and Huerta and their national contributions to the Latino community and the world in promoting and supporting labor reforms, human rights, civil rights, women’s rights, equity and diversity.

The Texas Department of Transportation still needs to approve the city’s action before the signs can be installed.

“Perseverance and hard work paid off,” District 2 Councilmember Carlos Flores said about the longtime effort to honor Chavez and Huerta. “I want to thank the members of LULAC District 21, LULAC Councils No. 4568 and No.4743, the Cesar Chavez Committee, city staff and all community members for their efforts and overwhelming support for this resolution.”

Chavez was a renowned labor and civil rights leader, a U.S. Navy veteran and co-founder of the National Farmworkers Association, which later became the United Farmworkers Union. He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Huerta, 89, is a labor and civil rights leader, a champion of women’s rights and an advocate for workers to earn living wages. She also received the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
