Following World War II, Fort Worth continued to grow rapidly. Numerous residential developments were created for the war’s veterans that took advantage of federal financial incentives. Worth Builders began to develop the Greenbriar Addition in 1951 in a 250-acre site south of the Quartermaster Depot along U.S. Highway 81 (South Hemphill Street) and the proposed Southwest Loop. The medium priced homes were built under FHA and VA approval. By the end of 1952, there were 375 families living in the development and the Greenbriar Shopping Center was set to open the following month. Twenty years later, a nearly 50-acre park bearing the Greenbriar name was constructed in the vicinity of the development. Improvements made to the park over the years include playground renovations in 2004 that were funded through a grant from the U.S. Department of Interior’s Urban Park and Recreation Recovery grant funds and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Community Development Block Grant Funds. In 2006, City Council approved the acquisition of a small parcel of land adjacent to the park for future improvement. That same year, the park received a group pavilion area, picnic tables, walkways, multi-use court, and site grading for two soccer fields. Adjacent to the park is the Greenbriar Community Center. It offers after-school program with outdoor activities such as canoeing and fishing in the park’s lake.
